Surgery and Critical Care Medicine
Graduate and valedictorian of Fordham University and New York Medical College. After surgical residency training at Lenox Hill Hospital and fellowship training at The University of Pittsburgh
General Surgeons are trained to operate on a broad spectrum of general medical conditions requiring surgery. General Surgeons are trained to provide care for the ‘whole patient’. This includes making a diagnosis; and providing preoperative, operative and postoperative care of their patients.
General Surgeons are required to have expert knowledge of the whole patient physiology and disease state. Their training encompasses extensive knowledge of anatomy, emergency and intensive care, immunology, metabolism, nutrition, pathology, physiology, shock and resuscitation, and wound healing. General Surgeons also provide non-surgical care for an extensive range of diseases.
General surgery frequently requires team-based interdisciplinary collaboration. Complex decision making is imperative in the care and pathology management of pediatric patients, geriatric patients, terminally ill or morbidly obese patients. The extensive training of a General Surgeon is invaluable when unforeseen situations present themselves during surgery.
To become a General Surgeon a medical doctor must complete 5 years of surgical residency before applying for board certification. Once they have met all training requirements and passed a rigorous examination process, they can be certified by the American Board of Surgery.
Most General Surgeons today can perform laparoscopic surgery which is minimally invasive. Laparoscopic surgery employs very small surgical instruments and tiny cameras. This surgical technique requires much smaller incisions than traditional procedures, resulting in faster healing time, less risk of infection, nerve damage and healing complications.
