Dr. Guy Lin received his Medical Degree from the University of California, San Francisco Medical School. He then went on to complete a General Surgery internship and an Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery residency at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Lin also completed a clinical fellowship in Facial Plastics and Reconstructive Surgery through the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. After entering private practice, Dr. Lin maintained a part-time academic position at Mount Sinai, teaching both residents and medical students at Elmhurst Hospital in Queens.

When should you see an ENT Doctor for a sore throat or Tonsillitis?

Can an ENT do Facial Plastic surgery?

ENT Surgeons are specifically trained to surgically correct and enhance the ears, nose, throat, and related structures of the head and neck. Facial plastic surgeons are certified by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. This certification means the surgeon has received specialized training and has the experience necessary to perform facial plastic surgery.

What does medical clearance for ENT surgery consist of?

Your ENT surgeon may request a medical evaluation by your Primary Care Physician before performing your surgery. A medical clearance is essentially authorization from an evaluating doctor that a patient is cleared, or deemed healthy enough, for a proposed surgery.

Why do I need blood and urine tests before ENT surgery?

Your ENT surgeon may order routine laboratory tests before your procedure to identify potential problems that might complicate surgery if not detected and treated in advance. A blood test will show if you have a blood-clotting problem and may be at risk of too much bleeding during surgery.  Urinalysis may be used to detect urinary tract infections, renal diseases and poorly controlled diabetes.

What is a pre op examination for ENT surgery?

A preoperative physical examination is essentially the same thing as getting 'medical clearance. It is performed at the request of your ENT surgeon to ensure that you are healthy enough to safely undergo anesthesia and surgery. This evaluation includes a physical examination, cardiac evaluation, lung function assessment, and appropriate laboratory tests.

Why do I need medical clearance for ENT surgery?

The purpose of medical clearance is to assess your personal risk related to undergoing a surgical procedure. If you have comorbidities your ENT surgeon may want another doctor familiar with your medical history to offer perspective on whether the procedure is safe for you and ways to reduce risk.

Who do I see to get medical clearance for ENT surgery?

How long is a medical clearance for ENT surgery valid?

Your medical history, physical exam and labs are valid for 30 days. EKG's that are normal are valid for 90 days. These parameters may vary if you have comorbidities.

Why is my ENT surgeon recommending a surgery center instead of a hospital?

Most ENT surgeries do not require an overnight stay. If your health, age and surgical procedure do not require a hospital stay after surgery, an accredited ambulatory surgery center may offer several advantages, including convenience, reduced cost and reduced potential for developing infection.

What does "Double Board Certified” Facial Plastic Surgeon mean?

Facial plastic surgeons are board-certified by the American Board of Facial and Reconstructive Surgery and/or the American Board of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery. The most qualified surgeons are those that are board-certified by both.

Can Sinusitis be treated with surgery?

If you have chronic or persistent sinus infections sinus surgery may be necessary. Endoscopy or balloon sinuplasty are common sinus surgeries. In endoscopy, a thin tube with a camera lens guides your ENT doctor to the blockage, which is gently removed.  This procedure requires no visible incisions and is performed under general anesthesia. In balloon sinuplasty a small balloon is guided to the blocked area and inflated, to clear the passageway.

I have difficulty breathing through my nose, do I need surgery?

Nasal obstruction is a blockage of your nasal cavity and can be due to conditions such as a cold, allergies, or sinus infection. Other obstructions such as septal deviation, inferior turbinate hypertrophy, or nasal valve collapse may require surgery. Nasal airway surgery is major surgery with risks and potential complications.  Nasal airway surgery can be minimally invasive endoscopic surgery, or open surgery. ENTs specialize in diseases and conditions of the nose.

What happens if nasal polyps are left untreated?

If nasal polyps go untreated for a long period of time, and become large, they can create constant pressure that leads to a widening of the nose and the space between the eyes. The structure of the face may be altered, and vision impairment can result. Nasal polyps that are resistant to medication can be removed in a surgical procedure (polypectomy).

I have a deviated septum; can an ENT doctor fix it?

Surgery to straighten the septum is called “septoplasty.” It is usually done by an ear, nose, and throat specialist. Plastic surgery can be performed at the same time, if you want to change the shape of your nose. Sinus surgery can also be combined with septoplasty.

Do ENT doctors do biopsies?

An ear, nose and throat (ENT) doctor can perform biopsies on the lymph nodes, gums, lips, glands, thyroid, mouth and tongue, to test for malignancy.

Do ENT doctors perform endoscopy?

An ENT specialist uses endoscopy to look at the back of your throat. An endoscope is a long, flexible tube with a camera and light at one end, and an eyepiece at the other.

Can hearing loss be treated with surgery?

There are several ear surgery procedures that restore hearing if you have certain types of hearing loss. But only a small percentage of people with hearing loss are actually good candidates for surgery.

I have a perforated eardrum, what do I do?

Most ruptured (perforated) eardrums heal without treatment within a few weeks. If the tear or hole in your eardrum doesn't heal by itself, treatment will likely involve procedures to close the tear or hole such as an eardrum patch or surgery.

My child has chronic ear infections, what can be done?

If your child's ear infections keep coming back and antibiotics aren’t helping, an ENT doctor will recommend a surgical procedure that places ventilation tubes in the eardrum. The tubes improve air flow and prevent fluid backup in the middle ear. The most commonly used tubes stay in place for six to nine months and require follow-up visits until they fall out.

Can Thyroid nodules affect your ears?

Both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism have been linked to hearing loss. Little is known about why thyroid conditions sometimes cause hearing loss, tinnitus, and balance disorders. An ENT Doctor can monitor your hearing and minimize damage that thyroid treatment may be causing.  

Do ENT doctors remove thyroid?

Otolaryngologists (ENT) doctors are highly qualified to perform thyroid removal.

I am always hoarse; do I need surgery on my vocal cords?

You should see your ENT doctor if your voice has been hoarse for more than three weeks. Chronic laryngitis can be due to several factors including vocal cord polyps, vocal cords that are loose or paralyzed, GERD or a neurological disorder. Your ENT doctor may recommend surgery if vocal cord polyp removal is indicated or if there is paralysis or laxity of the vocal cord.
