Podiatry or podiatric medicine is devoted to the study, diagnosis, medical and surgical treatment of disorders of the foot, ankle, and lower extremity.
A Podiatrist is neither a Medical Doctor (MD), nor an Osteopath (DO). Podiatrists are DPMs, Doctors of Podiatric Medicine. Podiatrists complete four years of training in a podiatric medical school and three years of hospital residency training. Podiatrists may go on to complete fellowship training following their residency.
While both orthopedic surgeons and podiatrists both are trained to treat foot and ankle problems, an orthopedic surgeon who has specialized in foot and ankle surgery is qualified to address a more complex level of problems. Podiatrists may specialize in surgery, sports medicine, wound care, pediatrics, and diabetic care.
The scope of a Podiatrist’s areas of practice is regulated at the state level. In some states a Podiatrist is allowed to treat hand conditions. Some states mandate the supervision of an MD or DO when anesthesia is required for a procedure.
In your initial visit be prepared to provide your Podiatrist with a list of your symptoms, all medications you are taking and discuss with him/her any previous surgeries. He/she will want to review all relevant medical records, Doctor and hospital reports, and prior diagnostic testing (including X-rays, MRIs, and lab results). You should know in advance if a procedure will be performed, you may need someone to drive you home. You may be asked to bring your walking or exercise shoes with you to the appointment.
