Frequently Asked Question

Wellness Medicine
Functional Medicine – Integrative Medicine - Holistic

“Take two aspirin and call me in the morning.” NOT! Instead of finding the quickest way to eradicate symptoms, a Wellness Doctor is going to get to the “why” of your condition.

The practices of medicine that are categorized as Wellness, Functional, Integrative, and Holistic are very similar in many respects; they approach the treatment of ailments with a whole body, holistic philosophy. These medical disciplines often bridge Western and Eastern medicine and take a healing approach that incorporates physical, emotional and environmental factors into a patient’s treatment protocol.

Wellness practitioners believe that treatment strategies that only focus on relieving symptoms, as with prescription of medication, or surgical interventions, incompletely address root causes of an ailment, which may be attributable to multiple factors. While Wellness practitioners are not categorically opposed to the use of medications or surgery, their initial approach is to treat illness and pain conditions using the intrinsic healing properties of the body.

Medical Wellness

  • Provides balanced, appropriate application of wellness modalities that are evidence-based practices within the clinical setting.
  • Promotes a cross-disciplinary approach to patient care, based on informed consent and decision support between the practitioner and patient.
  • Establishes a foundation for dialogue and collaboration between conventional and complementary practices with the primary goal of promoting optimal health and well-being.
  • Promotes the development and application of professional standards for wellness practices across clinical practices.

Wellness – Getting to the “why”
Functional – Integrative and Holistic Medicine

Functional, Integrative and Holistic practitioners focus on the “how and why” illnesses occur. These Doctors use comprehensive testing, natural supplements, and holistic practices to heal the root cause of varying, and sometimes seemingly unrelated symptoms.

The model of care is a patient-centered approach to chronic disease management. Prevention and healthy self-care is encouraged. Practitioners address the immediate health problems, as well as the deeper causes. Consideration is given to the physical body, the biochemistry, a patient’s psyche, history of emotional trauma, bioenergetic stress, and the genome.

Specific, comprehensive testing is done to diagnose the root causes of the complaint for each individual. The patient’s entire medical history is used to identify the origin of the problem, including triggers such as poor nutrition, stress, toxins, allergens, genetics and the microbiome. Once the triggers are identified, a customized healthy living plan is prescribed for the patient.{' '}

Treatment plans address physical needs, including nutrition, exercise and sleep, as well as mental and emotional stressors related to family, work and community life. They may include curated therapies such as supplemental enzymes and vitamins to assist the body in healing. Food is a first-line therapy in Wellness Medicine. Practitioners believe that the right nutrition combined with lifestyle and behavioral interventions enables patients to take charge of their health. The patient’s treatment plan may also include chiropractic, deep tissue work, acupuncture, nutrition counseling, and detoxification services.

Chiropractic care is another aspect of a comprehensive Wellness medicine approach because it helps patients achieve optimal health. Chiropractic is the science and art of restoring and maintaining health through the gentle, careful manipulation of the body joints and spine in order to restore normal nerve function. The integrated Wellness model is especially relevant with chiropractors who treat complex but common illnesses, such as chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia. It is also the most efficient treatment modality available to address spinal and extremity immobility that develops as a consequence of postural stress.

Characteristics of Wellness Medicine

  • The patient and practitioner are partners in the healing process.
  • All factors that influence health, wellness and disease are taken into consideration, including body, mind, spirit and community.
  • Providers use all healing sciences to facilitate the body’s innate healing response.
  • Effective interventions that are natural and less invasive are used whenever possible.
  • Alongside the concept of treatment, the broader concepts of health promotion and the prevention of illness are paramount.
  • The care is personalized to best address the individual’s unique conditions, needs and circumstances.
